The 2022 World Cup: the favourites

Five nations seem to stand out.  In the lead, Brazil.  Many specialists around the world are unanimous: Brazil is very lucky to find the summits ahead of France and Argentina.  Although  the five-time world champion  has not won  the trophy since 2002, he has thelabel of great favourite, with a team combining know-how, inspiration and youth in almost every position.  Moreover, she started the tournament well with a deserved victory.

The France, which is  in Group D with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia, will try everything to avoid the cut, as was the case  in 2002, when they left the competition early in the first round, four years after their consecration at home. But after a  resounding victory on the first day, the debacle is far from repeating itself this year.

Germany, champions in 2014, will also seek to avoid going out the back door as was the case in 2018.

Argentina’s loss to Arabia may have turned predictions and plans upside down. But Argentines have the ability and the gift to catch up.

Another big contender for the title, Belgium.  And yet, the  Belgians, although praised in recent years for the value of their game, often end up missing the doors to the final victory.   Perhaps in this new edition, the well-experienced  Belgium ends up triumphing.

Will an African country manage to make it past the first round?

Will Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia have as much assets and experience to glorify Africa by going further in the competition? In any case, Tunisia and Morocco have started the tournament well and perhaps these two countries will manage to meet the challenge and  come out of the pools unscathed by qualifying for the second round.  And why not be in the top 8.  This had not happened since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which saw an African country reach the quarter-finals.

A few stories about the World Cup!

•  Some of you may think that the trophy is all gold. And yet the truth is different. Indeed, a quarter of the cut is made of another material, it is,  in this case, fine gold-plated silver.
• In 1950, the national team of India, although qualified, gave up participating in the World Cup.  The reason? A new rule was introduced stating that players are no longer allowed to play barefoot, in order to improve the conditions of the game. A decision that had not pleased the Indian team, which  then took the decision to sulk this World Cup.
• In March 1966, four months before the inauguration of the World Cup in England, the trophy enigmatically disappeared from the exhibition where it was presented.  After lengthy investigations  by Scotland Yard, the trophy bearing the name of Jules Rimet was discovered by the dog Pickles in a London district, deposited against a car wheel.  To reward him, His master  had handed the  trophy with his hands to the winner!
