Will VR technology ever be widespread?

We’ve been hearing about virtual reality since the 1980s, but the technology hasn’t always been there. The technology has had a great breakthrough since the release of the Oculus Rift when we thought it would remain science fiction. Today the manufacturers have multiplied and each one tries to propose improvements in order to solve the concerns inherent in virtual reality. – Will VR technology ever be widespread?

VR games, too, are on the rise, and you can even use a VR headset to play in a real money online casino in Canada and enjoy some compatible live games. But will this way of approaching gaming and other aspects of entertainment ever be as widespread as smartphones?

Why VR is struggling to catch on

Price

One of the main concerns with VR is the price of the hardware. For example, Sony’s upcoming PSVR will cost more than the Playstation 5. It is therefore still a technology that is difficult to access for ordinary people and this affects the advancement of the technology, because fewer sales mean less confidence on the part of investors.

The possibilities

Although the infinite possibilities represented by virtual reality are harped on at the top of our voices, the reality of the market is for the moment quite different. Indeed, apart from a few titles that have made a strong impression like Half-Life: Alyx, new VR games that justify the purchase of an overpriced headset are still too rare. Certainly, technology has a lot of potential, but without video games, it will not really be able to be democratized, especially since it does not allow you to be competitive in the most popular eSports.

Motion-sickness

One of the main obstacles to the spread of VR is motion-sickness. Indeed, many people are prone to this phenomenon which can cause nausea. A large section of the population is therefore de facto excluded and cannot play the games on offer.

Necessary space

The other concern of VR technology is logistical. It is complicated to find space for some people and not everyone has ten square meters to dedicate to play. Even if you have the space, it may mean moving the furniture around every time you need to play.

Installation and calibration

This is a concern that technology enthusiasts do not necessarily have, but to use a VR headset, unless you limit yourself to the Playstation offer, you need a good PC and you have to succeed to install the helmet on it. Then you have to launch the game and calibrate your VR set to play accurately. This is a task that can be difficult and the slightest mistake can lead to losing the game. Will VR technology ever be widespread?

Comfort

To play a VR game, you have to be standing in most cases and in some titles the actions to be performed can be difficult. For example, if you are playing a shooting game, you will have to extend your arms as if you were shooting the weapon you are holding. In the long run, this proves difficult and it takes Olympic form to play for a long time. . A paradox at a time when we are used to playing for dozens of hours.

How VR is trying to catch on

VR can and is already growing, but to pick up the pace it is being employed in other areas. Already, it should be noted that virtual reality is increasingly used with augmented reality (AR). This is what Google or Apple are trying to put in place with their concepts of connected glasses or even Elon Musk’s very controversial Neuralink.

Virtual reality is also beginning to spread in the medical field with concepts developed to learn how to operate in medical school or operate patients remotely. It is also increasingly used in marketing and on social media for viral campaigns.

We see more and more use of VR in sectors such as real estate or tourism by offering virtual tours and we can therefore say that VR manages to establish itself in many areas. However, it is still in its infancy in all these areas and for the moment retains the image of a dispensable gadget. An image that is sometimes wrong, but unfortunately not always.

Towards a totally virtual world?

VR is a reality, it is there, but it remains a luxury, the prerogative of a few wealthy technophiles. However, this could change if the price becomes more accessible and the uses become more concrete. In the meantime, rest assured, society is still far from depending on it and it will take many more years before everything goes through virtual reality.
