Five tips for making nutritious lunches
(EN) If the start of the school year makes you anxious about not knowing what to put in your children’s lunches, take comfort because you are not alone.Five tips for making nutritious lunches.
A recent survey by the President’s Choice Children’s Foundation found that half of Canadians find it difficult to prepare nutritious lunches for their children, despite being a key factor in their academic success.
To help you assemble lunches that your children will eat with appetite, Geneviève Ledoux, dietitian, offers you some clever ideas to make the lunch box attractive.
- Use different types and sizes of bread to add variety. Opt for a veggie pizza over whole wheat pita for a healthier version of the classic pizza.
- Cut out the sandwiches with a cookie cutter to make them more fun to watch and eat.
- Let them put whatever they want in a multi-compartment container by choosing from a variety of fresh produce made early in the week. The only constraint is to ask them to have at least three food groups.
- Since children are more likely to eat the food they choose, this is a great way to make sure their lunch doesn’t end up in the trash.
- Try a do-it-yourself salad and wraps with rice paper and yogurt or a vinaigrette. Kids love to eat with their fingers, and the translucent wraps are super mouthwatering.
- When they’re made up of brightly colored vegetables or fruits.
- Have fun making sandwiches rolled on tortillas with them. They will have as much fun garnishing and rolling them as they will have tasting them.
