In 1953 Castro and 119 rebels attacked a barracks in Santiago de Cuba, but it was a complete failure. Castro fled the country and settled in Mexico, where he met Ernesto Che Guevara with whom he prepared plans for revolution.

In 1957, the rebels who had organized and improved their own infrastructure succeeded in overthrowing Batista and his guerrillas who had the country under their control.
