Warcraft: The Beginning

Released in 2016, the film unfortunately went almost unnoticed by the general public. Except, with fans of the Vikings series. In a more fantasy register, the leading actor Travis Fimmel, who had accustomed us to a ruthless Ragnar Lothbrock, sees himself taking on the role of Anduin Lothar in a much less epic way.

If we concede to spend a good moment in the company of this film high in green colors, it is to regret sometimes its lack of lyrical flights. Especially during the battles between orcs and humans. Indeed, the director Duncan Jones doesn’t take us as far as we could have expected from the original game, but the secret is to let yourself be taken by the charm of the characters! First of all, because the world of Azeroth and Draenor is worth it. And because we have to admit that Blizzard’s successful game is seriously well presented here, with a lot of effective CGI.

Between Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, and at the same time none of those, this movie is a breath of fresh air for the pure fantasy lovers who are too often bored in the cinema. This adaptation of Warcraft is therefore a nice surprise…and a good start!

Assassin’s Creed

In 2016, Assassin’s Creed aficionados were able to find their favorite game transcended to the cinema by famous actors with more or less enchantment: Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons starring David Cronenberg in his time, and Charlotte Rampling in the lead! All the ingredients of the game are sublimated thanks to the director Justin Kurzel.

All are unanimous on the faithful rendering of the time travel that Assassin’s Creed represents, namely the escapade in the 15th century at the time of the Spanish inquisition that made many people shudder. It is also a successful blockbuster for neophytes who will be charmed by a well-crafted scenario served by fight scenes that are, all in all, different from the ordinary. Ubisoft’s video game is adapted into an Escape Game by the Parisian establishment The Game, and the casino software publisher Microgaming has turned it into a superb slot machine.

Tomb Raider

The sequel to the first opus shot in 2013 with Angelina Jolie was highly anticipated, to say the least. In 2018, we could finally witness the confirmation that adapting Tomb Raider to the screen is still playable! Because the original idea of plunging a heroine such as Lara Croft on a hostile island eternally gives rise to inexhaustible scenarios.

Without waiting, this new film focuses directly on the archaeological plan which becomes central to the detriment of the island. This one, which is seen summarily as a decor. It is the enigmatic aspect that emerges as the underground exploration of the tombs, and the actress, Alicia Vikander, does it wonderfully! With happiness, the film links the actions that remind us of good memories of game.

However, it does not avoid the pitfall of some script heaviness, especially on the treatment of the affects of the characters who were revealed little by little in the video game Tomb Raider 9. At the risk of losing Lara in the labyrinths, we would have liked more atmospheric depth as well as a better OST. But that’s for sure for the next time. Thus, the director Misha Green has already planned a sequel for 2023!
