The best models of Volkswagen cars
Known as the German “people’s car”, Volkswagen was founded in 1937 as the “Geselschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagen mbH”. The name was then abbreviated as “Volkswagenwerk GmbH” and its registered office was established in Wolfsburg. The Volkswagen factory was originally intended for mass production of the ideal car of the average German, according to Hitler’s dictation.
However, after the start of World War II, production at the factory shifted to arms, and cars with the Volkswagen logo were taken over by the army of the Third Reich. The British then took control of the factory after the war and began producing Type 1, popularly known as the Beetle worldwide. The car remained the favorite of consumers even in the 60s and 70s, mainly because of its reliability, reduced fuel consumption and ease of maintenance.
Although it was replaced after losing its relevance over time, the Beetle played an important role in the establishment of Volkswagen in the automotive market. These are our picks from the best Volkswagen car models of all time.
Volkswagen Golf GTI 1975
Officially unveiled at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Volkswagen Golf GTI entered the British market in 1977. Only 34 units were produced (all left-hand drive), which were sold during the first year of testing. The car used a 1,588cc four-cylinder K-Jetronic fuel injection engine, which produced 110 hp at 6,100 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. With an empty weight of 810 kg, the GTI could run from zero to 60 mph in nine seconds to reach a top speed of 110 mph.
Volkswagen Type 11 “Beetle” 1946
The Volkswagen “Beetle” is one of the biggest cars of the 20th century. It was first the car of the German people, before becoming a cult classic and an all-time best seller. The Volkswagen, which was originally the brainchild of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, inspired unusual enthusiasm and loyalty due to its affordability, adaptability, reliability and practicality. Its layout was practical and the basic framework of the platform simple to build. In addition, the rear-mounted motor was directly coupled to the rear axle (thereby eliminating the drive shaft) and left a large gap between the wheels.
Volkswagen Scirocco 1977
Scirocco, also known as “The Racing Volkswagen”, was an excellent sports car specially designed for racing. 4.
Volkswagen Polo 1975
When it was launched in 1975, the Volkswagen Polo was recognized by What Car as the “best toy car in the world”. It was based on the magnificent Audi 50. Its first appearance on the British market took place in February 1976, after being unveiled at the London Motor Show.
1953-1979 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
The Beetle was assembled by Karmann of Osnabruck, including the installation of the Teutonic folding roof. The convertible was typically as compact and quiet as the sedan when buttoned, thanks to the thick sandwich construction at the top and the glass rear window. But once folded down, the hood created a gigantic “agitation”, giving the car a unique look. The convertible also benefited from the same design and the same mechanical refinements as those brought to sedan models over the years.
Production of the Convertible Beetle ended in 1979, when the price of the car in the United States rose excessively due to inflation and the relative value of the dollar against the Deutsche Mark.
