Five tips to reduce the risks associated with vaping
(EN) The use of vaping products is becoming increasingly popular. According to the recent Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey by Health Canada, 15% of Canadians say they have tried one of these products. Although vaping is less harmful to smokers who turn to it completely, there are several risks that should be known. Five tips to reduce the risks associated with vaping.
These risks range from nicotine addiction, nicotine poisoning, and injury from device failure. Here are some tips to reduce these risks and several other health hazards:
If you don’t smoke, don’t vape
Take into account the presence of nicotine, which is very addictive. The use of vaping products containing nicotine can lead to addiction in people who would not otherwise have become addicted to it. However, it should be noted that not all vaping liquids contain the same concentration of nicotine, some do not close them at all. Children and youth can become addicted to nicotine even if they are exposed to lower levels than adults.
Handle liquids safely.
Vape liquids that contain nicotine are toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin, especially for young children. To reduce health risks, store liquids out of the sight and reach of small children and pets. Store them in a cool, dry place where they are not likely to be mistaken for food, drink, or medication. To reduce the risk of injury to yourself or a child, close the container tightly after each use and wash your hands immediately after handling any of these liquids.
Choose low power products
Vaping substances contain fewer and different chemicals compared to tobacco products, but some other chemicals in vaping products still pose health risks. Vaping products used at higher power and temperature can emit more chemicals. It is therefore necessary to opt for low power products.
Use the batteries safely
Lithium ion batteries and vaping devices can be dangerous if not used, stored, transported and recharged properly. Obtain batteries compatible with your device and from a reliable source. Avoid walking around with lithium-ion batteries in your pockets; do not store them in a place where they could touch coins, keys or other metallic objects. Incidents caused by improper battery operation have resulted in serious injury.
Know how to react in case of a problem.
Even in small amounts, vaping liquids containing nicotine are very dangerous if ingested or absorbed through the skin. If someone has swallowed vape, consult an emergency doctor or call 911 immediately. If you notice a safety issue with a vaping device or vaping liquid, report it to the manufacturer or retailer and contact Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Program
