(NC) The basic rules of laundry seem fairly straightforward, but it sometimes feels like a graduate degree in stain removal is required. To help you simplify stain removal, here are some simple tips to follow for five of the most common (and most frustrating) stains.

How to clean up lawn stains.

Like dye stains, grass stains contain a pigment that adheres to clothing fibers. The secret is to act quickly by soaking the stained item in cold water as soon as possible. When the garment is soaked with water, use a cleaning agent such as white vinegar, rubbing alcohol or even bleach (if you are treating a white garment) to remove the stain.

How to clean red wine stains.

To treat a stain of red wine, it must be dabbed. If you rub it, it may sink deeper into the fibers. When buffering is complete, apply salt liberally to the stain, allow it to dry, then wash the item in cold water with a mixture of detergent and baking soda.

How to Clean Lipstick Stains.

Remove lipstick stains by pretreating them with a solvent-based stain remover (or a little liquid detergent). Let the stain remover work for about 15 minutes, then wash the garment in the hottest water the fabric can tolerate – be sure to read the care label.

How to clean spots of Sauces.

Can’t eat pasta without spilling tomato sauce on your top? Simply apply dish detergent to the stain and rub with an ice cube. When the stain has turned pale, wipe it off with a clean cloth dipped in vinegar and wash the garment as usual

How to clean oil and grease stains.

Start by covering the stain with baby powder or cornstarch as quickly as possible. The powder will absorb most of the fat or oil. After 30 minutes, shake the garment to remove excess powder and wash it in the warmest water the fabric can tolerate.
