Seven Tips to Keep Food Safe in Your Kitchen

(EN) The kitchen is the heart of your home, as it is where you prepare delicious meals and gather family and friends. To protect yourself, your family and your friends, here are Health Canada’s tips on food safety. The following are the Seven Tips to Keep Food Safe in Your Kitchen.

  1. Use a digital food thermometer to make sure you cook food to its safe internal cooking temperature. Wash the thermometer in hot soapy water before and after each use.
  2. Always wash your hands before and after touching raw meat. Wash your hands in warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds or with an alcohol-based disinfectant.
If dishes or utensils have come into contact with raw meat. Do not reuse them until you have washed them thoroughly.
  3. Use a cutting board for fruit and vegetables and another for meat.
Change the cloth every day. Do not use a sponge as it is more difficult to prevent the growth of bacteria there.
  4. Sanitize counters, cutting boards and utensils with a mild bleach solution (5 ml bleach in 750 ml water) before and after preparing food. Let the solution work for a few moments, then rinse with clean water and allow to air dry or use clean cloths.
  5. Keep cold food cold and hot food warm, so that their temperature never reaches the “danger zone” from 4 ° C (40 ° F) to 60 ° C (140 ° F), where bacteria can multiply rapidly and cause food poisoning.
